"Capital Markets in Armenia" Conference held on 27 February 2009 in Armenia

The first "Capital Markets in Armenia" conference, organized by Grant Thornton Amyot, the Armenian member of Grant Thornton International, was held in the Republic of Armenia on 27 February 2009.

The conference was supported by the Republic of Armenia Central Bank, the Republic of Armenia Ministry of Economy, the Union of Banks of Armenia, NASDAQ OMX Armenia, the American Chamber of Commerce in Armenia, USAID "Financial Sector Deepening Project", Armenia Marriott hotel, "Mediamax" news agency, Capitalmarket.Banks.am web partner of the conference, "Basis" economic and "Business Class" magazines.

In the official opening of the conference the speakers, namely Mr. Nerses Yeritsyan, Minister of Economy of the Republic of Armenia, Mr. Armand Pinarbasi, Managing Partner of Grant Thornton Amyot and Mr. Johan Fredholm, Regional Manager of NASDAQ OMX Armenia, spoke about the impact of capital markets on the development of the Armenian economy, highlighted the roles of different players in the market in this process, as well as emphasized the need for uniting efforts in order to stand strong in the times of economic turbulences.

Over one hundred representatives of public and private sectors, as well as international organizations, mainly persons in executive positions, participated in the conference. Armenian and foreign experts, including Mr. Colin P. Aaronson, Director, Capital Markets, Grant Thornton UK, Mr. Pierre Cazilhac, Director, Capital Markets, Grant Thornton France, Mr. Gian Piero Cigna, Principal Counsel, EBRD London, UK, presented to the businessmen the perspectives of making Initial Public Offerings (IPOs), the tools and procedures related to capital markets and the peculiarities of their application in the Republic of Armenia.

Especially for the conference Grant Thornton Amyot, with the support of colleagues from NASDAQ OMX Armenia and USAID Financial Sector Deepening Project, developed the "Capital Markets and Public Transactions" Handbook, the first publication on capital markets in Armenia providing general oversight into the sphere. The Handbook is available in the Publications section of www.gta.am.
